My Little Rascal

Rascal became part of my life on July 4, 1993. I was gone for the long holiday weekend and upon my return my neighbor Helen told me she had a present for me. Of course I couldn't imagine what kind of present she would have, but when I saw that cute little face, I knew I would have a housemate.

He was 7 weeks old and so full of energy that he wore me out just watching him.

Here are some of the cute things he has done:

The first time he saw himself in the mirror. I was holding him and all of a sudden heard growling and hissing, he thought he had discovered another cat in his house, actually it was his reflection in the mirror. I held him and quietly explained that there was only 1 cat in my life and that was him. Somehow I got the impression that he understood because he has never hissed at the mirror reflection again.

Sometimes we play "Where's the kitty". Rascal hides in the tub and I walk in to the bathroom and ask "where's the kitty?". He cowers down in the tub so he thinks I can't see him, then pops up and attacks when I get too close.

He also likes to chase his tail in the tub. When he was young and his tail was too long for his body, he would run in one direction then flop down looking exhausted. The next thing I knew he was up chasing his tail in the other direction unwinding himself. This would go on for 10 minutes or more before he would actually get tired and crash in the tub.

My favorite bathroom story is when Rascal fell in the toilet. I accidentally left the lid up on the toilet & Rascal being the curious kitten he was HAD to jump up and check it out. The next thing I heard was "PLOP" and when I turned around there was half cat body and this huge tail sticking out of the toilet.

I grabbed him quickly and washed his face and front paws because I use toilet bowl cleaner. He of course didnt appreciate the bath. I called the vet and it was hard not to laugh trying to explain that my cat had fallen in the toilet.

The nurse laughed and said it happens all the time but you can imagine how frantic I was because in all my experience with cats I cant remember ever having this happen before.

By now you are probably wondering how Rascal got his name. When he was at my neighbor Helens, she had a 15 pound tom cat named Max who had only half his tail. When I first was watching him wondering what to name him, he started chasing Max and of course Max wanted nothing to do with him. That was until Rascal hit the stump of Maxs' tail. Then Max turned around and swatted rascal in the head sending him flying across the room.

He looked at me like asking "What did I do?" and I knew his name would be Rascal. He has lived up to that name and he also has lots more most of which are not nice.

One night I was eating dinner at my computer desk and Rascal was on the disk drive watching me hoping something would fall his way. I had a forkful of peas and before I knew what had happened, Rascal swiped at the fork sending peas flying. Then having done his evil deed for the day stretched out on the disk drive to sleep leaving mom to clean the mess.

As you can see, Rascal has been a source of great companionship and laughter in the almost 4 years since he came to live with me. It hard to believe he will be 4 years old in May, I am still waiting for him to "grow up". These are but a few of the things he has done and in my next installment, if there is one, I can add to these stories. You never know what he will do next.
