I heard the voice of death today,
wanting me to let him set the pace.
He took my hand and pointed the way
and said that it would be an easy race.
He said his path had neither tears or pain,
he said that anyone could find release,
and said I could lay down my load and gain
my goal, a true and lasting peace.
If I had set my feet upon his road,
and let myself be tempted by his line,
It would have been because the path he strode,
Appeared to be less difficult than mine.
He thought to hold me in a close embrace,
But I had seen the lies upon his face
